The Ghana Football Association Ban Kotoko, Police interdict Shooting officer, Update on Victim’s Condition

The Ghana Football Association Executive Council has decided to temporarily ban Asante Kotoko from playing its matches at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium pending the adjudication of the matter by the Ghana Football Association Disciplinary Committee. The GFA’ decided to hand this punishment to kotoko due to they not being able to control their fans in their defeat to Chelsea


According to joysports’ account, a fan was shot by Police at the Ghana Premier League game when Kotoko lost to Berekum Chelsea. Fans were throwing missiles after ref gave a yellow card to a Kotoko player in a case of mistaken identity. The subsequent reaction saw a police personnel shoot the fan, with photos showing blood splattered all over the floor in the stadium. A Kotoko official says the fan is in critical condition, but alive.

The Ghana Football Association Executive Council at its meeting on Monday, January 13, 2020, decided to trigger the provision of Article 14(2) of the Ghana Football Association Premier League Regulations.

Article 14 (2) of the Ghana Football Association Premier League Regulations states that: “the Ghana Football Association may order the closure of any league centre/venue where the safety of clubs, match officials and/or spectators cannot be guaranteed.”

The Ghana Football Association Prosecutor shall prefer charges against any person/party found to have breached any provision of the Ghana Football Association Regulations or Disciplinary Code.


Kumasi Asante Kotoko have given update on the identity severity of his injuries and condition of the victim via their Twitter page stating

“🚨Update on Sunday’s shooting incident🚨

Victim has been identified as Augustine Opoku, a commercial driver based here in Kumasi.

Our medics say he was hit by four pellets of rubber bullets in his head; 2 in his left jaw, 1 directly in his right eye and 1 beneath his teeth.

They posted that so far the operation is ongoing and the victim has been stabilized

“We are told that, the pellets in his teeth and jaw have been removed. The one in his eyes will be handled by a team of eye specialists maybe today. Meanwhile, Augustine is still stable and responding to treatment.”


They released another statement condemning the act of the supporters and warning them against such act

Meanwhile the Ashanti Regional Police Commander has interdicted the police officer who allegedly shot a fan at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi on Sunday.

The interdiction, according to Regional Police Commander, will be in force until investigations into the matter are concluded.
